Stand-up comedian work is about shaping jokes, stories and short routines for live audiences in comedy clubs, bars, theatres or other performance spaces.
Stand-up comedians perform humorous monologues, one-liners and acts, often adjusting timing, voice, movement and audience contact during a live set.
In job descriptions, look for live performance, prepared routines, rehearsal, stage timing, audience type, comedy venue, microphone work, touring, props, music or other performance elements.
The work usually begins before the show: writing jokes, testing rhythm, arranging a set list and preparing openings, callbacks or transitions. On stage, the comedian reads the room, manages pauses and keeps the routine moving.
Useful strengths include live performance, storytelling, comic timing, handling feedback, rehearsal discipline, microphone technique and enough stage awareness to recover when a line lands differently than expected.
Pay context depends on venue size, booking model, touring commitments, writing work, media appearances, repeat bookings and whether the comedian provides a full show or a short support slot.
Experience can lead from open-mic sets to hosted evenings, touring shows, writing for other performers, radio or screen comedy, corporate events, festival work or production of original comedy material.
Check whether an advert asks for original material, a fixed show length, family-friendly content, improvisation, music or props. The audience and venue usually explain the real performance demands.
