What the work can involve
Prop masters and prop mistresses work backstage, on stage and in rehearsal spaces where objects must be ready, safe, visually consistent and in the right place at the right cue. They prepare props with road crew, preset them, hand them to actors and collect them again during the performance.
Skills and specializations
Core skills include adapting props, defining building methods, maintaining props, changing over props, preparing stage effects and protecting the visual quality of the set. Some roles add prop sketching, materials selection, stage weapons, consumables stock or scenic changes during performance.
Salary context
Salary positioning is often shaped by production scale, number of props, touring or repertory pace, effect complexity, safety-sensitive objects and responsibility for stock or crew. A role covering design and maintenance may sit differently from performance-only prop running.
Career paths
Experience can lead toward head of props, props designer, stage manager support, scenic workshop work, stage effects coordination, production management support or specialist work with weapons, food, period objects or mechanical props.
